No More Losses!

Updated: August 16, 2009

Why are so many Americans so angry? Why are they shouting and screaming at the health care reform meetings the government stages? What's their problem? They're mad because they've lost too much and don't want to lose any more.

Over the past year most Americans have seen their retirement accounts lose more than half their value as the stock market tumbled. For many people this simply means the comfortable, leisurely retirement they always assumed was their birthright - is now gone. This is a terribly bitter pill for many to swallow.

To add insult to injury the equity in their homes has also now gone. Not only can they no longer extract cash from their rapidly growing home equity as they did in the past, now they can't even sell the place as the real estate market has ground to a virtual halt.

The mindset of these people is clear. They've suffered terrible losses - losses no one ever thought possible and they're extremely sensitive to the idea of losing anything else.

Now President Obama comes along with his new agenda of health care reform followed by Social Security reform followed by Medicare reform followed by Medicaid reform. It's a long list and most Americans want nothing to do with any of it!

"Everyone is going to have to take a haircut! (a loss)"
- President Obama

They're sick and tired of surrendering their hard-earned gains. They're in no mood for more losses.

The result is obvious. President Obama is right when he says that all these government entitlement programs desperately need to be reformed, but in this environment those reductions are all but impossible. So the programs will go on happily speeding their way toward the inevitable collision with a brick wall.
